- My current 14.4 faxmodem isn't supported by Windows NT Workstation 3.51,
- so I need to get a new one. That's okay, I was planning to upgrade to a
- 28.8 model anyway.
-
- I've narrowed my search to the following (external) models:
-
- Creative Labs Modem Blaster 28.8
- US Robotics Sportster 28.8
- Supra 28.8 FaxModem
-
- All these modems are V.34-compliant, and I've confirmed their support under
- NT (i.e., they are on the hardware compatibility list and/or the vendors
- assure me they will work with NT). Here are the pros and cons on each
- modem:
-
- Creative Labs Modem Blaster: Pros: Least expensive of the three, lots
- of good information on their WWW page (including NT-specific
- information). Cons: No flash ROM, hence not download-upgradeable.
- Doesn't seem to have much market visibility, which means getting
- help/service may be a problem. The company seems to be very focused
- on game-playing, and I never play games.
-
- US Robotics: Pros: Widely available and, I'm told, the most common
- modem to dial into, which is apparently important for 28.8 modems.
- Cons: More expensive than Creative Labs, no flash ROM, ugly
- appearance. The Navas 28800 Modem FAQ WWW page indicates that USR has
- been getting sloppy with their 28.8 sporster models.
-
- Supra: Pros: Flash ROM, which should make for easy upgrades.
- Cons: most expensive, apparently little market presence (though they seem
- to be more common in the Mac world).
-
- The safe option seems to be to go with USR, but for only $10 more I can
- get the Supra, and I find its flash ROM attractive. Also, its readout
- is more detailed, from what I can tell. Furthermore, I think the USR
- models are ugly. At the same time, I have a soft spot for the Creative
- Labs modem, not only because it's the least expensive, but because they
- put useful information on-line, which is not something I can say about
- USR or Supra. I want to encourage companies to put useful information
- on-line.
